This home is loaded with wonderful vintage details worth preserving: The kitchen features a beautiful layout that serves as an authentic time capsule of 1940s home design. A hallmark feature of kitchens from this era is the continuous stainless steel or chrome metal trim wrapping around the countertops and matching along the top edges of the wall cabinets. The original wooden cabinets include distinctive elements characteristic of the period:     •    The vented sink base: The linear slot cutouts under the double-bowl porcelain sink were standard in 1940s cabinetry to allow air circulation and heat to escape from plumbing underneath.     •    Period hardware: The curved, offset chrome drawer pulls and cabinet latches perfectly preserve the streamlined aesthetic of the early-to-mid 20th century.     •    Scalloped window valance: The decorative wooden trim bridging the gap between the upper cabinets above the kitchen window frames the space in classic vintage style.  Given that the house was built in 1940 in Bethesda, Maryland, the stone work is almost certainly Carderock Stone (historically also referred to as Stoneyhurst mica schist or Potomac bluestone). Carderock stone is a highly localized mica-schist quartzite. It is exclusively extracted by Tri-State Stone & Building Supply from a local quarry right in Bethesda, Maryland that has been operating since 1926. During the mid-20th century—especially the 1930s and 1940s—this exact local stone became the defining architectural signature of homes, regional landmark buildings, and stone retaining walls built throughout Montgomery County and Washington, D.C.
